Fort de Vézelois

Territoire de Belfort, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The Fort de Vézelois, properly called Fort Ordener, was built between 1883 and 1886. It belongs to the eastern French fortification system known as Séré de Rivières and is an integral part of the Belfort stronghold. It lies between the communes of Meroux and Vézelois, south-east of Belfort.

Its plan is a symmetrical pentagon, with barracks and stores, able to house a garrison of 500 to 600 men. Its artillery was moved to outer batteries from 1887, and further work was carried out in 1909.

The fort is run by the association Le Renouveau du Fort de Vézelois. It is mainly visited with a guide, in summer or by appointment, and the tour lasts about two hours.
