Cuves de Duzon

Ardèche, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Cuves de Duzon are a geological curiosity of the Ardèche, on the Duzon river between Tournon-sur-Rhône and Lamastre, in the commune of Saint-Barthélemy-le-Plain.

Over time the water has carved large potholes, known as cuves, into the granite; the river passes through them before rushing into a narrow fissure followed by the path. The site is recognised as a notable feature of the local natural heritage.

Access is on foot. A family route starts from a car park before the Duzon bridge on the D534, follows a wide forest track past the Grange de Vaures and then descends to the cuves: about 3.7 km one way. Another approach starts from Saint-Barthélemy-le-Plain, near a mill. The cuves are also popular with swimmers, but the terrain calls for caution.
