Coulée basaltique de Jaujac

Ardèche, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Rushing down the foothills of the Tanargue (altitude 1,300 metres), the Lignon, a sometimes torrential river, runs past the village of La Souche (altitude 600 metres) then crosses the town of Jaujac (altitude 420 metres). Downstream of Jaujac, its clear waters glide at the foot of basalt flows among the most beautiful in Europe: the lava of a volcano crystallised into basalt organ pipes forming the present cliff beneath the village.
