Chatel

Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Châtel is a commune in the Haute-Savoie on the Swiss border, in the Abondance valley, at the foot of the Morgins pass. A mountain village that has kept its wooden chalet architecture, it is also a winter and summer resort, regarded as the northern gateway to the Portes du Soleil ski area.

Its ski area has two sectors, Super-Châtel and Linga - Pré-la-Joux, linked by lifts since 2014. Super-Châtel connects on skis to La Chapelle-d'Abondance, Torgon and Morgins in Switzerland, while the Linga sector gives access to Avoriaz and Montriond.

The valley is also known for Abondance, a cheese made from the milk of the breed of the same name, still produced here. The resort suits families and beginner skiers; in summer the area is good for hiking.
