Château du Castellas

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Set on a promontory, the fortress of Forcalqueiret, in the Var, rises some 130 metres above the plain. It is the most important medieval military building in the Var. The top of the peak is entirely surrounded by a curtain wall enclosing the castle and the village, and a deep dry moat completes the defences.

Built in the 13th century and heavily altered in the 15th, it was finally abandoned during the 17th century. Meanwhile the lordship remained for 320 years in the d'Agoult family, then became the military fief of Hubert de Vins, leader of the Catholic party, pursued by the Protestants.
