Château de Sercy

Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

In the Grosne valley, in the commune of Buxy in the Saône-et-Loire, the castle of Sercy was, with Brancion, one of the keys of the Mâconnais, charged in particular with defending the Abbey of Cluny.

It is a lowland fortress backing onto a hill that belonged to the abbey, which the lords of Sercy long wished to buy in order to entrench themselves there. The castle is distinguished by a tall tower topped by a hoarding, said to be the oldest wooden gallery of its kind in France.
