Château de Montmirail

Marne, Grand Est

It was by inheritance that the castle became the property of the La Rochefoucauld family. The castle, raised in the sixteenth century on the foundations of an old fortress, saw the future Cardinal de Retz grow up, and Vincent de Paul occupied for sixteen years a room on the first floor. It was deeply remodelled in the following century and its park laid out by Le Nôtre to receive Louis XIV. It is a large brick building set with stone, with two shallow wings at right angles at the far end of an avenue of horse chestnuts. Its great terrace overlooks a pond and, lower down, the Petit Morin valley and the undulations of Brie.
