Château de Montguyon

Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The stronghold of Montguyon, in the Charente-Maritime, is recorded from the 11th century. It was taken during the Hundred Years' War and became a Protestant fortress in the Wars of Religion, visited several times by Henry of Navarre.

The building was fronted by a bailey and a drawbridge. The main residence was flanked by a tower probably dating from the 13th century, remodelled in the late 15th and early 16th centuries; burned in 1793, it partly collapsed. A small passage in the wall leads to a windowless domed room. The upper floors had square rooms that keep their monumental fireplaces. Former outbuildings stand outside the walls, and the remains can be visited.
