Château de Montastruc

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Château de Montastruc is a private château at Lamonzie-Montastruc, in the Dordogne, in the Périgord Pourpre. It stands on a rock beside the Caudeau. Built in the 13th century above prehistoric cave dwellings, it was destroyed in 1438 and rebuilt in 1475, after the widow of Bertrand d'Abzac submitted to royal authority.

Blaise de Monluc besieged it in 1568. In the 18th century the medieval house was extensively remodelled and received most of its interior décor. In the following century Abbé Audierne lived here from 1849 to 1861 and the park was redesigned. During the Second World War, Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg stayed here briefly in exile.

The ensemble includes the medieval residence, stables, a dovecote, an oratory and the remains of a barn. Partly registered in 1973, the château has been fully protected since 2001. No recent source gives visiting arrangements.
