Château de Montaigne

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

A château has stood here since the 14th century, remodelled several times and partly rebuilt after the fire that ravaged it in 1885. A private, inhabited property, it is not open to visitors; only the Tower, spared by the flames, can be visited. Montaigne made it his refuge.

On the ground floor is the chapel dedicated to Saint Michael. On the first floor is the room where he died. On the top floor is the Library, where he fixed his humanist thought for ever in 57 Greek and Latin maxims painted on the ceiling beams, and where he wrote his Essays between 1571 and 1592.
