Château de Méréville
The present state of the park and château of Méréville, in the Essonne, no longer reflects the richness and perfection of the ensemble created between 1784 and 1793 for the court banker Jean-Joseph de Laborde.
On his arrival, the architect Jean-Benoît Barré greatly altered the old feudal manor with its four turrets, turning it into a rich, spacious residence where the marquis could entertain in keeping with his power. East of the château, on the garden side, the great meadow where the Juine winds can still be seen, but the follies, ruined or sold, are missing from the landscape. Solid artificial rockwork and a few grottoes remain along the cliffs.
