Château de la Vervolière

Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Château de la Vervolière, in the Vienne, is a picturesque group of buildings begun in the 11th century and completed in the 15th (machicolated towers, dovecote…), arranged around a central courtyard. One of the towers houses a straight-flight staircase which, though modest in size, seems to be the oldest of its kind in France.

The chapel dedicated to Saint Michael keeps traces of 15th-century wall paintings. This castellany is the former fief of the du Plessis family, and thus the cradle of the family of Cardinal Richelieu. It opens during the Heritage Days.
