Château de Fère-en-Tardenois

Aisne, Hauts-de-France

Of the old castle of Fère-en-Tardenois, in the Aisne, built in the 13th century on an artificial, polygonal, paved feudal mound, the bases of its seven towers survive, decorated with a cogwheel pattern.

In the 16th century the famous two-storey gallery bridge was built over the ditch between the postern and the entrance pavilion, a forerunner of Chenonceau. On the death of Henry II, last Duke of Montmorency, the castle was confiscated by Louis XIII, before being demolished by the Duke of Orléans, the future Philippe Égalité.
