Château de Crèvecoeur

Calvados, Normandie

The Château de Crèvecœur, in the Pays d'Auge near Lisieux, in the Calvados, is part of an architectural ensemble representative of the region's half-timbered buildings. This listed site, dating from the 11th century, is one of the rare local fortresses still visible.

The lower courtyard houses the farm buildings (farmhouse, dovecote and barn) and the seigneurial chapel. The upper courtyard, protected by its moats, motte and wall, contains the manor house. Restored by the Musée Schlumberger foundation to present mementoes of the work of Conrad and Marcel Schlumberger, the château has gradually become an active cultural centre devoted to the arts and traditions of the Pays d'Auge since 1973.
