Château de Beaugency (château Dunois)

Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire

In the heart of Beaugency, a stone's throw from the Loire and its medieval bridge, the Château Dunois is a seigneurial residence built in the 15th century at the foot of the town's Romanesque keep. It takes its name from Jean de Dunois, the 'Bastard of Orléans', comrade in arms of Joan of Arc. Owned by the kings of France and then the dukes of Orléans until the Revolution, it saw Louis XI and François I pass through.

Turned into a poorhouse in the 19th century, then a museum of Orléanais arts and traditions until 2002, it reopened to the public in 2014. Since 2021, its rooms have hosted an immersive projection trail telling the story of the site, along with digital art exhibitions. The main courtyard, the chapel and the hanging garden are discovered during a visit to this small Loire town.
