Château d'Héricourt
The origins of the castle of Héricourt, in the Haute-Saône, cannot be dated precisely, but probably go back to the 12th century, based on a charter of 1173 that first mentions Héricourt and its castle.
This true medieval fortress stood on a limestone shelf in the upper, northern part of the town. Covering 3,290 m², it was flanked by strong towers linked by a solid rampart 12 m high and 4 m wide, surrounded by an 8-m ditch filled with spring water; a well 26 m deep and 2.5 m across supplied the inhabitants.
Dismantled in the 18th century, only the great tower remains: a stone staircase leads to three spacious rooms, each with a fireplace.
