Château d'Harcourt

Eure, Normandie

The Harcourt estate, in the Eure, was given in the early 11th century by Rollo to one of his companions, from whom the Harcourts descend. It was the cradle of this illustrious family, whose line was continued for nine centuries by the Rieux, Lorraine-Elbeuf, Beauvau and Noailles-Poix families.

A fine example of medieval military architecture, Harcourt has kept its fortified curtain wall above impressive ditches, its bailey, its gatehouse and its seigneurial residence, modernised at the end of the 17th century. The castle is now set in a renowned arboretum of some thousand rare species, within a 100-hectare wooded park.
