Alpe d'Huez
Alpe d'Huez, nicknamed "the island in the sun" for its exceptional sunshine, is an Isère ski resort set at 1,860 metres' altitude in the Grandes Rousses massif, in the Oisans. It is the heart of a ski area of 250 kilometres of pistes stretching from 1,250 to 3,330 metres, one of the largest vertical drops in Europe, peaking at the Pic Blanc. There you find the Sarenne, a 16-kilometre black run reputed the longest in the world. The resort also marked Olympic history by hosting the bobsleigh event of the 1968 Grenoble Games.
