Abbaye de Longpont

Aisne, Hauts-de-France

The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Longpont, in the Aisne, was founded in 1131 by Bernard of Clairvaux at the request of the Bishop of Soissons. It became one of the most important Cistercian abbeys in the region before being sold as national property during the Revolution and partly destroyed.

Of the immense abbey church, a dizzying arch of the façade survives, open to the sky, surrounded by the remains of the cloister and monastic buildings. The fortified village of Longpont, nestling at the edge of the Retz forest, has kept its ramparts and medieval gate, a picturesque setting for these Gothic ruins.
