Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer
Built right on the sand, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer occupies a unique position between the Camargue lagoons and the Mediterranean, the undisputed capital of the Camargue. According to legend, three Marys from the New Testament landed here after the death of Christ, giving their name to the town and its fortified church, topped by a wall walk offering a complete panorama over the Camargue.
Every year in May, the town hosts the great Gypsy pilgrimage in honour of Saint Sara, when the statues of the saints are carried down to the sea in a colourful procession. The rest of the year, the seaside resort lives from its fishing port, its wild beaches and Camargue traditions, between gardians on horseback and herds of bulls.
