Saint-Floret

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The charming houses of this village press against one another on the banks of the Couze de Pavin, precisely where the valley of the same name is narrowest, in a place riddled with gorges and granite escarpments.

Remarkable restoration work has given Saint-Floret back its picturesqueness and colours. But what truly makes this flowered village, whose old fifteenth-century bridge spans the Couze, valuable, even more than the church, is the Gothic hall of its former castle at Le Chastel. Its walls illustrate episodes from the Romance of Tristan: only a dozen frescoes of the original forty remain but the ensemble painted in the fourteenth century is prodigious.
