Lourdes
Lourdes is a small mountain town in the Hautes-Pyrénées, on the Gave de Pau. It was here, in 1858, that a young girl named Bernadette saw the Virgin Mary appear eighteen times in a grotto near the river.
Every year nearly six million visitors from more than 140 countries come here, and Lourdes is presented as the most visited town in France after Paris. Despite these numbers, it keeps the character of a place of contemplation, linked to its religious history.
