Le Pont du Diable (Ariège)

Ariège, Occitanie

The Devil's Bridge spans the Ariège in an enclosed part of the valley, near Montoulieu and Mercus-Garrabet, between Foix and Mirepoix. It is a fortified pointed-arch bridge with two arches, listed as a historic monument since 1950. On the left bank remain the remains of a fortified house that served as a bridgehead.

Tourist offices and on-site panels attribute it to the thirteenth century; a legend associates it with the count of Foix Raymond-Roger, who is said to have had a bridge built by the Baron of Saint-Paul. Another source gives construction in the seventeenth century, and dating therefore remains debated.

The structure links the communes on either side of the river. It is today accessible only to pedestrians and cyclists.
