Lac du Montagnon

Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Lac du Montagnon, or Lac du Montagnon d'Iseye, is a mountain lake in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the commune of Accous, in the Aspe valley. It lies several hours' walk from the valley, in a high-mountain setting of grassland, scree, ridges and horizons of Pyrenean peaks, with superb views when clouds cling to the valleys.

It is reached by a demanding hike requiring fitness, good shoes and settled weather. Summer storms are frequent in the afternoon, so set off early and take water, warm clothing and a map. The lake makes an excellent day's goal for lovers of wide open spaces, between the Aspe and Ossau valleys.
