biodiversarium Aquarium de Banyuls

Pyrénées-Orientales, Occitanie

The Biodiversarium is the aquarium of Banyuls-sur-Mer, in the Pyrénées-Orientales. It is the science centre of the Banyuls Oceanographic Observatory, attached to Sorbonne University, which founded it at the end of the 19th century.

The tanks present nearly three hundred species typical of the Catalan coast: groupers, seahorses, jellyfish, corals and many invertebrates, in settings that recall their natural habitats. The aquariums are supplied with running seawater.

A special feature of the site is a glimpse behind the scenes of the Observatory's research laboratories, linking the animals on display to the scientific work carried out on the Mediterranean.

The site is accessible to people with reduced mobility and to pushchairs. A Mediterranean garden, the Mas de la Serre, can be visited separately on a guided tour booked in advance.

The visit suits families, school groups and anyone curious about the local marine environment.
