Aix-en-Provence
Former capital of the counts of Provence, Aix-en-Provence has kept from that era a dense historic centre of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century mansions. The Cours Mirabeau, an avenue lined with century-old plane trees and dotted with mossy fountains like that of the Rotonde, is its backbone.
Birthplace of Paul Cézanne, Aix multiplies the traces of his passage: his studio kept as it was, the landscapes of the surrounding countryside that he painted relentlessly, foremost among them Mont Sainte-Victoire. The Musée Granet, the many Provençal markets and the international lyric art festival complete the cultural appeal of this university town renowned for its art of living.
