Saut du Gier

Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The River Gier rises just below the Crêt de la Perdrix (1,431 m), the highest point of the Pilat, at the place called La Jasserie (1,299 m). From there comes the great 'Saut du Gier', as the river drops 900 metres in just 12 km.

The Gier is fed from two slopes: the Pilat to the south and the Monts du Lyonnais to the north. They meet near Givors before flowing into the Rhône. By then the Gier has crossed 32 communes. Its old name, 'Gierez' or 'Gierest', is probably the origin of the name of the Jarez area.
