Château de la Verrerie

Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The Château de la Verrerie, in Le Creusot in the Saône-et-Loire, houses in its central block the ecomuseum's Museum of Man and Industry, and in the real tennis hall the exhibition 'Le Métal, la Machine et les Hommes' by the Académie François Bourdon. These exhibitions trace the industrial history of the town, its factories, its workers and the Schneider dynasty. There is also an exhibition of crystal, an animated model of the Le Creusot workshops around 1900 and the models shown at the world's fairs. Bought by the town in 1969, the château also houses the tourist office.

The 28-hectare English-style park is a green lung in the heart of the town. It is home to century-old trees, such as a Himalayan weeping pine, a tulip tree and an Atlas cedar, forming an arboretum of about fifty species. Between the pond, the animal enclosure and the playground, it is a pleasant place for a walk. Near the château, French formal gardens and a large terrace overlook the central lawn that slopes down to the pond.
