Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Major
Built between 1852 and 1893 on the site of the old Romanesque cathedral, whose remains still stand beside it, the cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Major impresses with its size — one of the largest cathedrals built in France in the 19th century — and its Romano-Byzantine style, striped with green Florence stone and white Cassis stone.
Its dome rises to 60 metres and its position, between the Panier district and the Joliette docks, makes it a landmark visible from the entrance to the port of Marseille. The interior holds mosaics and polychrome marble that contribute to the splendour intended by its architects to assert the city's religious standing at the turn of the 20th century.
